Vesak Full Moon Poya Day is the most sacred day for Buddhists around the world. As nature blooms and the surroundings fill with serenity, we commemorate a day that changed the course of human history.

The Significance of Vesak

Vesak marks the Triple Anniversary of Gautama Buddha, honoring three major milestones in his life,

1. The Birth of Prince Siddhartha in the Sal Garden of Lumbini.

2. The Enlightenment of Siddhartha Gautama, becoming the Buddha under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya.

3. The Parinirvana (Passing away) of the Buddha in Kushinagar.

How We Celebrate Amisa and Prathipatthi Puja
The celebration of Vesak is a beautiful blend of external splendor and internal devotion.

1. Amisa Puja (Offerings of Material)

During this season, the world transforms into a sea of light and color.




• Vesak Lanterns & Thorana: Intricate paper lanterns (Vesak Koodu) symbolize the light of the Dhamma. Grand Pandols (Thorana), illuminated with thousands of lamps, depict stories from the Jataka tales.



• Dansal (Alms Stalls): A true reflection of Sri Lankan generosity, where free food and drinks are offered to travelers and devotees as an act of selfless giving.

2. Prathipatthi Puja (Offerings of Practice)


While the lights are beautiful, the Buddha emphasized that the highest honor is to follow his teachings,
• Observing Sil (The Eight or Ten Precepts) and practicing meditation.

• Listening to Dhamma sermons to enrich the mind.

• Practicing kindness (Metta) toward all living beings.

The Message of Vesak

Vesak is more than just a festival of lights; it is a reminder of the impermanence (Anicca) of life. Just as a beautiful lantern eventually fades or withers in the wind, our lives are transient. The true essence of Vesak lies in purifying our thoughts, being compassionate, and finding inner peace amidst a chaotic world.

This Vesak, let us strive to look beyond the decorations and focus on illuminating our hearts with wisdom and kindness.

If I say that the artist who first ignited my passion for this field was also the very first artist I ever met, I wouldn’t be wrong at all. That person is none other than Tabla Vadya Visharada Kolitha Perera. I first met "Kolitha Aiya" (brother) during the days I used to visit Sandhya Miss’s home. To this day, he remains the most humble and immensely talented artist I have ever encountered. Kolitha Aiya is a proud student of Master Prasanna Rupathilaka. An Unforgettable Journey: My Best School Trip Ever 💗!

This was a trip that I will cherish for the rest of my life. It happened back when we were doing our Advanced Levels, organized by the Arts Section of Thurstan College. To look after us and guide us with love, our Head of the Arts Department, our class teachers, and another teacher joined the trip. We visited several amazing places during this journey. Our very first stop was the historic Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devalaya. After seeking blessings there, we didn’t forget to visit the famous Ahalepola Walawwa as well. One of the most important and inspiring highlights of our trip was getting the chance to visit the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka.
