The Sri Lankan Soul 🇱🇰❤️
No matter where we go in the world or who we meet, there is a secret formula that sets us apart from everyone else. We call it the "Sri Lankan Identity" or simply, our Apekama (our sense of togetherness). It is far more than just a nationality written on a birth certificate; it is a feeling deeply woven into our DNA.
So today, I felt like taking a moment on my blog to remind ourselves of who we really are.
1. That Smile... The One the Whole World Knows!
When we talk about our identity, the first thing that comes to mind is the smile on our people's faces. Walking down the street, even when eye contact is made with a complete stranger, they will flash a heartwarming smile. I have never seen this anywhere else in the world quite like in Sri Lanka. It is not a fake, polite smile; it comes straight from the heart. No matter how much the world changes, that genuine smile remains exactly the same.
2. Hospitality (We Are All One Big Family)
If someone visits our home, it is our custom to make a cup of tea and serve it before even asking, "What would you like to drink?". Sharing what we have and running to help someone in trouble on the road—without any difference of race or religion—is something embedded in our genes. Even the word "Ayubowan" is not just a simple greeting; it is a sincere wish for a long and healthy life.
3. Our Spice-Filled Flavors
You simply cannot separate the Sri Lankan identity from our dining table!
• The nostalgic tune of the Choon Paan (bread mobile) early in the morning,
• Red rice served with fresh pol sambol and dhal,
• Spicy pol roti that makes your tongue burn just the right amount,
• And that perfect cup of Ceylon tea that gives you an incomparable kick.
These are the flavors that make us homesick and bring tears to our eyes no matter where we are in the world.
4. Art and Heritage
Our identity is made even more majestic by our Perahera (pageant) culture, the rhythmic beats of the Geta Beraya (traditional drums), Ves dances, and intricate carvings that come from thousands of years of history. Whether it is a batik dress we wear or a traditional handicraft, it carries the proud heritage passed down by our ancestors. ❤️
