Embracing a New Rhythm,My Journey into Low Country Dance

My Journey into Low Country Dance

I have always had a deep love for traditional dance. Since I was a child, I practiced the graceful and energetic Up Country (Kandyan) dance style. However, in 2022, a wonderful new chapter began in my life. I met my teacher, Guru Jagath Gunawardena, at Thurstan College, where he serves as the dance instructor. Meeting him opened up a beautiful opportunity for me to learn the Low Country (Pahatharata) dance form.

Guru Jagath is a highly respected teacher who mastered this traditional art under the legendary Guru Sandoris, a master artist from the Raigam Korale.

Under my Guru's guidance at his academy, the Sith Roo Academy of Fine Arts in Hokandara, I prepared for my big day. I finally got the chance to make my debut performance (my Kalaeli Madu Mangallaya) at the historic Hokandara Purana Viharaya. It was truly one of the most unforgettable and proudest days of my life.

I am deeply grateful to my Guru for passing down this sacred art to us. I wish him long life, good health, and the strength to continue this noble work for many years to come! 🙏❤️
